Welcome to the Meldon Viaduct Website

On Saturday 6 July 2002 the refurbished Meldon Viaduct was formally opened by the colourful television science presenter Adam Hart Davis. At the opening ceremony the significance of the Viaduct as a local amenity and part of the Okehampton to Lydford Granite Way cycle/walkway which was in itself part of the National Cycle Network Route 27 called Devon Coast to Coast was well recognised.

The Viaduct itself, a Victorian wrought and cast iron structure, spans a tree covered valley providing extensive views over the surrounding lush countryside. Not far away is the still active Meldon Quarry extracting railway ballast, roadstone and other industrial aggregates which is taken out by rail via Okehampton Station onto the mainline at Exeter. Nearby is the Meldon Dam and Reservoir whose permissive path gives access to the secluded West Ockment valley.

In fact this whole area is a location where cycling and walking, industrial archaeology, rural grandeur and modern industry meet and mix. This website, created by Meldon Viaduct Company Limited, is for those who wish to know more about the viaduct and its environs whether planning for a cycle ride or discovering another marvel of Victorian engineering.
