Meldon Viaduct Company

In February 1999 the Meldon Viaduct Company was set up for the sole purpose of safeguarding and maintaining the Viaduct to ensure its future as a monument to Victorian engineering and as a valuable recreational resource.

The company was established as a non-profit making company limited by guarantee with charitable status. As such it has no shareholders, only the original bodies which created the company (Aggregates Industries Limited, Dartmoor National Park, Devon County Council, and West Devon Borough Council) acting as guarantors (£1 each).

Its Board of Directors currently includes representatives of Aggregate Industries Limited, Dartmoor National Park, Dartmoor Railway, Sustrans, and the County and Borough Councils.

The popularity of the Viaduct with the cycling and walking public as the high point along The Granite Way and a superb resource of great historical and recreational significance comes at a price. The huge steel structure needs to be regularly maintained, and eventually overhauled so it is vital that sufficient funding is secured by Meldon Viaduct Company to safeguard its future..
Funding the Future

With no sources of direct income (e.g. trading), or shareholders to draw on, Meldon Viaduct Company has to rely on voluntary contributions to fund both ongoing maintenance costs and to build up reserves for the structure’s next major overhaul – currently anticipated for 2020 and likely to cost in the region of £500,000.

Current limited funding comes from several organisations (mainly the originating bodies but also including Okehampton Town Council, Okehampton Hamlets Parish Council and Okehampton United Non-Ecclesiastical Charity) committed to preserving the structure for the benefit of the area and for future generations.

However this is still not nearly enough to cover the full overhaul, and the continued existence of the viaduct will still be dependent on grants, donations, legacies, gift aid etc., and the challenge will be to establish significant funding for the long term.
